From the Memorial Bridge to Lake Santa Fe, one dispatch board
Putnam County is big, spread out and split by a river. Here is how a company headquartered 35 miles east in Palm Coast actually covers it, town by town.

How a coastal shop routes a river county
Cook’s dispatches from 37 Fairmont Ln in Palm Coast. SR 100 runs west from there to East Palatka and across the Memorial Bridge into downtown Palatka, about 35 miles and 51 minutes. From the bridge the county fans out: US 17 south along the river through Satsuma, Pomona Park, Crescent City and Huntington; SR 20 west to Interlachen and the lakes; SR 100 and SR 26 northwest to Florahome, Grandin and Melrose.
Rather than send a truck on a 70-mile round trip for one call, we group Putnam County into route days. Maintenance visits anchor the schedule, repairs fill in around them, and emergencies go to whichever technician is nearest when the phone rings. The phone itself is answered around the clock with no after-hours charge, and the drive never adds to the price.
The towns, roughly by drive
Palatka and East Palatka are the core: the historic districts, Palatka Heights, Newtown, the downtown storefronts and, across the river, the farmers market and fairgrounds area with its rural lots and manufactured homes. FPL serves both.
Satsuma and San Mateo, down US 17 where Dunns Creek meets the St. Johns, are a few minutes beyond Palatka, with riverfront homes that know what flooding looks like.
Pomona Park, on Lake Broward, and Crescent City, between Crescent Lake and Lake Stella, sit 15 and 22 miles south of Palatka. Lake cottages, older homes and manufactured housing, mostly on Clay Electric.
Huntington, out CR 308, rounds out the southern leg.
Interlachen, 17 miles west on SR 20 among its 28-plus lakes, and Melrose, on SR 26 near Lake Santa Fe, make up the western leg, along with Florahome and Grandin on the sand ridge.
What changes town to town
The equipment problems shift with the geography. Riverfront Satsuma and Welaka mean raised condensers and flood inspections. The Interlachen lakes mean humidity control and sinkhole-shifted pads. Melrose and Crescent City mean Clay Electric rebate paperwork rather than FPL’s. Downtown Palatka means historic review and ductless design. East Palatka means package units. The area pages below take each one in turn.
Coverage questions
Melrose spans four counties. Does that confuse the schedule?
No. We treat Melrose as the northwest end of the Putnam route regardless of which side of the county line a house sits on. It is the longest drive on the board, so Melrose visits are grouped on the same day as Interlachen and Florahome.
Is Huntington too small for you to bother with?
It is on the route. Huntington sits on CR 308 west of Crescent City, and the handful of homes there are scheduled with Crescent City and Pomona Park. Small towns are where a thin market needs a reliable company most.
Do you work East Palatka and San Mateo on the far side of the river?
Yes, and they are actually a few minutes closer to our shop than downtown Palatka, since SR 100 reaches the east bank first. The farmers market area, the fairgrounds neighborhoods and the manufactured homes along the river are regular stops.
- Historic DistrictsNorth and South Register districts plus the Hammock. Tall frame houses, pier foundations, and heating and cooling that came decades after the house.
- Palatka HeightsBungalows and post-war houses on the high ground beside Ravine Gardens. Pollen season, hillside drainage and attics full of surprises.
- Downtown & RiverfrontStorefronts under the murals, offices by the courthouse, apartments over shops, and equipment that lives within sight of the river.
- Newtown & US 17Small block and frame houses from the 1950s to the 1970s. Straight talk about repairing versus replacing, and what each one buys you.
- East PalatkaAcross the bridge on the east bank. Manufactured homes, farm country, the fairgrounds and a flood line we still measure from.
- San MateoA former town on the east bank along US 17. River lots, acreage, private wells and the orange stain in the condensate pan.
- SatsumaDunns Creek, Crescent Lake and the St. Johns meet here. Creekside houses, fish camps and the moisture load that comes with them.
- Welaka & GeorgetownBass Capital of the World and the hamlet below it on Lake George. Fish camps, rental cabins, riverfront homes and a flood memory from 2022.
- Pomona Park & Lake ComoOn Beautiful Lake Broward, as the town sign says, and the smaller lake community just south. Lakefront houses, old citrus land and summer power bills.
- Crescent City & HuntingtonBetween Crescent Lake and Lake Stella, with Huntington out CR 308. Old lake-town houses, fern sheds, manufactured homes and the farthest regular stop on US 17.
- Interlachen & HollisterBetween the Lakes, as the town says, plus Hollister on the way in. Lake cottages, manufactured homes, sand-ridge sinkholes and Clay Electric.
- Florahome & GrandinThree SR 100 ridge communities west of town. Sand plants, pine woods, old railroad-era houses and manufactured homes in dust country.
- MelroseLake Santa Fe's historic community where four counties meet. Register-district homes, newer lake houses, Clay Electric, and the far end of our map.
- BostwickNorth of Palatka on US 17. Blueberry farms, the April festival, the power plant's cooling towers on the skyline, and rural homes on wells.
