Warranty and maintenance before anything else

Two air handlers of the same age in two Palatka houses can be in completely different shape, and the difference is almost always the service record. Before we recommend replacing an air handler, we ask two questions.

First, is the existing equipment still under a parts warranty? Lennox and most other brands carry long parts coverage when the system was registered at installation. A failed blower motor on a registered eight-year-old handler is a warranty part; on an unregistered one it is a bill. We check the serial number before quoting anything.

Second, has the drain been maintained? In Putnam County that question matters more than almost anywhere, because so much of the county is on private Floridan Aquifer wells with iron, sulfur and hardness. A handler whose drain line has been flushed twice a year is a different machine from one whose pan has sat full of scale and slime for a decade. Rust-through of the pan and corrosion on the coil are the usual consequences of the second case, and no repair reverses them.

Why that matters for this particular product

An air handler is three things in one cabinet: a blower, an evaporator coil and a drainage system. Each fails differently.

  • The blower wears out mechanically and is often the cheapest fix. On a system under warranty, replacing it is routine.
  • The coil corrodes and leaks refrigerant. A leaking coil on an older handler is where the repair-or-replace conversation starts, because the coil is a large share of the handler’s value.
  • The drain and pan fail from neglect, and in a flood-prone address near the river, Dunns Creek or Crescent Lake, from water that came up from below rather than down from the coil.

The handler is also the component most likely to be mismatched. Palatka’s housing stock is old enough that many systems have been replaced piecemeal by different contractors over thirty years, and an outdoor unit from one decade bolted to a handler from another runs poorly and voids coverage.

Buying guidance for Palatka houses

When the air handler does need replacing, the choice has three parts.

Match or pair. If the outdoor unit is recent, registered and the right refrigerant, a matched replacement handler alone is reasonable. If the outdoor unit is past about twelve years or on an older refrigerant, replacing the pair costs more now and less over the decade.

Blower type. A variable-speed blower is our standard recommendation in this humidity. It costs more and it earns it in moisture control.

Fit. Hall closets in the block houses of Newtown and the 1920s frame houses of the historic districts were never designed around a modern cabinet. We measure the opening, the return path and the drain route before ordering, and we will say so when a closet needs a bigger return rather than a bigger handler.

Every handler we set gets a float switch, a cleanable trap and, on well water, a drain treatment schedule. Cook’s installs Lennox and services every brand from the Palm Coast headquarters, no after-hours charge.

Air handler questions from Putnam County homes

The outdoor unit is only six years old but the handler inside is from the 1990s. Can I replace just the inside?

Sometimes, and this is exactly the case where it is worth asking. The new handler has to match the outdoor unit’s refrigerant and capacity, and the pairing has to be one the manufacturer rates together, or the efficiency and the warranty both suffer. We check the match before quoting a handler alone.

Our well water leaves orange stains in the sink. Does that affect the air handler?

It affects the drain. Condensate itself is clean, but biological growth and the minerals in the splash and humidity around a rural Putnam handler scale the drain line and the pan faster than in a city-water house. We flush and treat the line on every visit and add a float switch that kills the system on a clog rather than letting the closet flood.

Our house in East Palatka took water in 2022. Is the handler ruined even though it seems to run?

If floodwater reached the cabinet, assume the blower motor, control board and insulation are compromised even if it starts. Insulation inside a flooded handler holds moisture and grows mold against the coil. We will inspect it honestly, but a handler that sat in St. Johns River water usually needs to come out.

Is a variable-speed air handler worth the extra cost in a small house?

In this humidity, usually yes. The variable-speed blower lets the system run longer at low speed, which wrings extra moisture from the air and makes 77 feel like 74. In a small Palatka Heights house it is often the most noticeable comfort upgrade on the quote.
