The myth

“The air conditioner handles the humidity.” It is said in every HVAC conversation in Florida and it is half right. An air conditioner removes moisture while it runs, as a byproduct of cooling. When it runs long and steady in July, that byproduct is substantial. When it runs in short bursts, as it does on a 78-degree May afternoon or an October evening, or when it is oversized and satisfies the thermostat in eight minutes, almost no moisture comes out.

Putnam County makes this worse than most of Florida. Houses on Crescent Lake, Lake Broward, the Interlachen lakes and the St. Johns sit next to open water that feeds the air all night. Houses on crawlspaces, which means most manufactured homes and the older frame houses, pull moisture up through the floor. A cottage at 75 degrees with 68 percent humidity feels like the dock because, in terms of the water in the air, it nearly is.

Efficiency math for a wet county

Running damp costs money in three ways. The thermostat gets pushed down to 72 or lower because that is the only lever most people have, and every degree costs on the electric bill. The air conditioner runs more to hold that setting. And the house itself pays: swollen doors, mildew on the closet walls, musty soft goods, a coil that grows a biological film.

A whole-house dehumidifier changes the equation. It pulls moisture out directly, so the thermostat can sit at 77 and the house feels like 74. The dehumidifier uses electricity to do it, but far less than the air conditioner uses chasing humidity with cold. On an FPL bill in Palatka or a Clay Electric bill at the lakes, the household that runs 77 and dry typically spends less for the season than the one that runs 72 and damp, and lives in a nicer house.

Ducted into the return, the dehumidifier runs when the air is wet whether or not the thermostat is calling for cooling.

Upfront against lifetime

Approach Up-front Over a decade here
Thermostat down to 72 Nothing Highest electric cost; clammy; hard on the equipment
Portable dehumidifiers in two rooms Low Buckets to empty, noisy, high power for little coverage
Whole-house dehumidifier ducted to the return Moderate Lowest total cost; quiet; one drain; whole house at 50 percent

A whole-house unit is the larger check and the smaller decade. We quote it with the drain, the circuit and the humidistat as one number.

The short honest case against humidifiers

The product category is “humidifiers and dehumidifiers,” so here is the humidifier half. Palatka has perhaps a few dozen winter days dry enough to make a house uncomfortable, and most of the county is on private wells whose iron and sulfur destroy a humidifier’s pad and valve within a season. Unless someone in the house has a medical need for winter humidity, we recommend against it, and we will say so even though it is a sale.

Financing

Dehumidifiers are often added alongside a new system, where they fold into the same financing with low monthly payments. On their own they are a smaller purchase that most households handle directly. Either way the quote is free and the numbers are in writing. Cook’s installs Lennox Healthy Climate dehumidifiers from the Palm Coast headquarters and services every brand.

Humidity equipment questions from the lakes and the river

Why is the house damper in May than in July when it's hotter in July?

In July the air conditioner runs for hours and pulls moisture out as a side effect. In May the outdoor air is already humid but the house only needs cooling for a short burst in the afternoon, so the coil never runs long enough to dry anything. A dehumidifier works on humidity directly, independent of temperature.

Can't I just set the thermostat lower to dry the house?

You can, and you will pay for it twice: in electricity and in a house that is cold and still clammy. Dropping to 71 to chase humidity is the most expensive way to get a result a dehumidifier gives at 77.

We're on a well with sulfur in the water. Is that why the old humidifier failed?

Almost certainly. Putnam County well water carries iron, sulfur and hardness that scale a humidifier’s pad and feed valve in a season. Combined with how few dry days this climate has, it is the main reason we talk most people out of a humidifier.

Does the dehumidifier need its own drain?

Yes, and on a well-water house we trap and treat it like a condensate line because the same minerals build in it. On a crawlspace house we route it outside rather than under the floor.
