Why we work from a list here

Crescent City is roughly twenty-two miles south of Palatka on US 17 and Huntington is a few miles farther west on CR 308, which puts them at the outer edge of what we cover from Palm Coast. A second trip for a forgotten part costs everyone half a day. So the truck that comes here is stocked for every brand we are likely to meet, and the technician works through the same nine checks before deciding anything.

The nine checks

  1. Electrical first. Capacitor values, contactor contacts, breaker and disconnect condition, and any evidence of surge damage, which is common on the rural lines around the lakes.
  2. Refrigerant pressures and temperatures. Low charge is the most frequent cause of a weak system here, and we find the leak rather than top it off.
  3. Outdoor coil. Fern-shed dust, oak pollen and lake-shore grit pack the fins; we rinse before we judge the compressor.
  4. Airflow and filter. Returns in manufactured homes are undersized by design, and a loaded filter makes it worse.
  5. Duct under the floor. On manufactured homes, a crawl under the skirting to look for split seams, disconnected runs and sweating.
  6. Condensate drain and float switch. Well water adds iron to anything fed by it; the drain is where it collects.
  7. Flood or water history. Houses near Crescent Lake and Lake Stella get the question, and we look for stain lines.
  8. Thermostat and controls. Fan setting, staging, and whether the thermostat sits on a sunny wall.
  9. The age conversation. Nameplate date against condition, so the repair-or-replace answer rests on facts.

Crescent City itself

A city of about sixteen hundred on a ridge between Crescent Lake to the east and Lake Stella to the west, Crescent City has the best-preserved small-town fabric in the county’s south end: oak-lined streets, two National Register listings, Victorian and Frame Vernacular houses from the 1880s and 1890s, Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s, and block homes from the mid-century ring. Lakefront houses line both shores. Manufactured homes fill the lots at the edges and along the county roads.

The older houses mirror what we see in Palatka’s historic districts: little or no ductwork, window units, a gas space heater or wall furnace, and a strong case for a ductless system. The mid-century houses run split heat pumps of various ages. Water is city water inside the limits and wells outside; electric service is a patchwork of FPL in town and Clay Electric around it, which matters for rebates. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

Huntington

Huntington is a crossroads community on CR 308 west of Crescent City, in fern-growing and former citrus country. The housing is overwhelmingly manufactured homes and a few older frame houses, nearly all on wells and Clay Electric. Package units do the work. Shade-cloth fern sheds and their packing houses are the local industry, and their cold-storage equipment is part of our commercial route.

What fails most at this end of the county

Lightning and surge damage lead the list, more than anywhere else we go in Putnam County. Control boards, capacitors and thermostats fail after afternoon storms, and we recommend surge protection on every replacement. Package-unit duct problems come second. Refrigerant leaks on aging coils come third, and the deferred-maintenance failures of systems that have not been looked at in a decade fill out the rest.

The drive

From 37 Fairmont Ln in Palm Coast, Crescent City is about an hour and a quarter by SR 100 and US 17, and Huntington roughly ten minutes beyond. We answer the phone around the clock, do not add an after-hours charge, and arrive with the nine-check list and the parts to act on it.

Crescent City and Huntington callers want to know

You are a long way off. Do you really come to Huntington for a single repair?

We do. Huntington is about an hour and twenty minutes from our Palm Coast shop and we make the trip for repairs, maintenance and installations alike. We group calls along US 17 when we can, and the price does not include a distance surcharge.

Our 1890s house near the lake is on the National Register. Any special concerns with new equipment?

The listing itself does not restrict mechanical work, but we treat the house as if a reviewer were watching: outdoor units at the side or rear, line sets routed through closets, no cuts through decorative woodwork. Ductless systems do this gracefully in tall old rooms.

The power blinks every afternoon storm. Is that why my control board failed twice?

Very likely. Rural lines around Crescent Lake take lightning and switching surges that city grids absorb better, and control boards and capacitors are the first casualties. A whole-system surge protector at the disconnect is inexpensive compared with a third board.

Can you service the equipment in a fern packing house?

Yes. Cooling for packing and cold-storage areas is commercial work we handle from the same shop, including maintenance agreements timed to the shipping season.
